Blog Post #7: Conclusion to Another Semester

There are many things that I have learned this semester by maintaining this blog. First of all, there was a learning curve with WordPress as I had never used it before, it just so happened that three of my six classes this semester required me to use it. It was pretty simple, there were minor things that I had to teach myself but other than that, I think it was a great platform to hand our assignments in on. This is a great example of New Media as there are many physical publications that have turned to new media to catch up with the constant development of new technology. For example, in this class, we talked about how we get our news. It started by reading the newspaper everyday, to watching it on TV because you wouldn’t have to wait until the next morning to receive the physical newspaper, to TV news anchors getting their information from the internet from breaking news stories online. This class has taught me just how different times are from just handing in physical papers. This is great for the environment, no room for printing or dog-eating errors and you are able to hand in an assignment before class.

Secondly, I had never learned about rhetoric before, utilizing this style of writing has helped me realize that I can really use it in any medium that I desire. Whether it’s appealing to reader’s emotions, gaining trust from your readers through expressing credibility, or persuading by the use of reasoning, rhetoric is a very useful tool that takes my writing to a whole other level. I am able to speak with creditability and confidence now that I understand how to appeal to the readers of my specific discourse. Through writing about Graphic Design, I have become even more passionate about my field of work, gained more knowledge about contemporary artists in the design industry and how important design is in the world of New Media. Interfaces are only as successful as how user-friendly they are, this can be attributed to the hard work of programmers and designers to make the experience as simple and easy as possible. For example, web designers are paid a lot of money to design themes for blogs. There are many criteria that determine how successful the theme is, however one of the up most important ones is how easy it is to navigate. This is key because a blog may be seen by a variety of audiences and it is important to cater to everyone so that there is not a specific type of reader that can view your blog, you want to reach a broad audience. This will give your blog more exposure and shareable potentiality.

In a world that is run by technology that is constantly changing, it is important as a designer to adapt and expand your skills to adjust and expand our skill set. Initially, a designer would be required to have a strong talent for illustration. My grandmother was a graphic designer and she would design logos and tuna can designs by hand. Now a days as a designer, web coding, interactive design, web design and strong computer skills are of upmost importance.  Overall, there are many links between the evolution of new media and graphic design, it is important to keep up to date and be open to learning new skills in order to expand your skills as a professional designer.
